Do You Work at a Desk?

Posted by Alice Seba

Tough Question Tuesday Okay, this question isn’t really TOUGH…but it’s interesting to learn about where people work.

Last year, when we moved into a new home, I was excited to have my very own office that I didn’t have to share with anyone. I got new furniture, have a comfy desk chair, got it all set up and guess what? I’m just about never in there, except when I need to do some printing.

I work on the coach, on the bed, in the backyard and even the kitchen table - but rarely at my desk.

Do you work at a desk? Where do you work?

I don’t have the luxury of working anywhere but my desk. I don’t have a laptop so I don’t have the freedom to move about and work anywhere else. I’ve wanted a laptop for the past 2 years now & I hope that one of these days I’ll be able to purchase one. Then I’ll be everywhere but at my desk!

I turned one of our bedrooms into an office. Bought a new desk, chair, and all the fixin’s. Even though I am mobile with my laptop, the majority of my time is spent in my office, at my desk. And since I have work-a-holic tendencies, I have conditioned myself that when I leave my office for the day, work is done!

I have my own office/workspace room and that is where I can be found the majority of the day. My desk, computer, sewing area and all my lavender goodies are here.
It is centrally located in between the kitchen, dining and family room so I am in the midst of everything going on. I find myself doing everything at my desk, even stuff that can be done elsewhere. I have caught myself going to my computer chair just to sit down to put my shoes on!
I guess it is my comfort zone. I always say I want a laptop for mobility purposes, but I bet if I had one I would sit it at my desk! lol

I work at a desk. The only problem is my kids like to play their games on this computer. Wish I had a laptop to move around but I’m not sure if I’d become more distracted in a different setting.

I work at my desk. I do have a laptop but it’s pretty old so the connection is really slow and I can’t get anything done on it.

I’m at my desk mostly. Occasionally on my BlackBerry with a baby in my lap ;)

I work at a desk when I’m home. Like the others, i don’t have a laptop, so not much choice. Although, since i bought an iPod Touch, I’ve been doing reading and research wirelessly from everywhere. Lying in bed, sitting on the couch, even in the um…, well, let’s just say everywhere in the condo.

I have a laptop and 99% of the time I work at my desk. I do take my laptop out for a spin for pleasure reading a bit more.

I have a laptop, and I like to work on the patio during the 2 or 3 months it’s actually nice outside, or in the kids’ schoolroom when I can. We homeschool, so it’s handy for me to work near the kids. But when I need to really concentrate, I go back to my desk and shut the office door.

I work at my desk mostly, but I do have a laptop. I’ve found that some of the work I do is much harder to do on the laptop than at the desk because I’m either printing a lot, or have files spread everywhere, or just need a number keypad.

Now that it’s nice out, I’ve been taking the laptop outside, and I love that! Will be working on trying to make the laptop more work-friendly so I can get outside more often!

When we moved into our new house, I literally took over the dining room alcove. I have a recliner, one of those levenger lap desk tables and a pretty screen dividing my office space off from the rest of the living room. But… I generally work anywhere but there…

So, I started today thinking I should work in my office today and realized what’s keeping me out of there.

Ummm…no cable. I have monitor/TV/DVD player…but no cable TV. I *need* TV on in the background to concentrate.

Just called up my cable guy husband and asked if he’d install it in the office. He said it’s doable, so maybe I’ll be working in my office soon. :-)

I need to work in a big space so my desk (36″x72″) is part of my living-room. I tried to use a spare bedroom as an office, but I can’t stay in a cramped space. My dream is to buy a huge condo eventually.

I got myself a tiny laptop: Asus EEE PC, so I can use it on my balcony, in the dining-room, at the restaurant or in the municipal library. The Asus is cheap, weighs less than 2 lbs and is shockproof as well. Very practical also to read (in bed) all those ebooks I got over the years.

The screen is easy on the eyes and as I write on the Asus all the time now I got used to the small keys and work as fast.

I don’t sell this little marvel but I think everybody should know it exists mostly when money is an issue or if you want a more steamlined space in your office. I must add I’m obsessed with decluttering ;) Hoping this helps.

    PS: great blog!

I work at my desk, I eat at my desk, one time I fell asleep at my desk.

I have a laptop but it’s older than me so it’s not very practical. One of my goals is to get a better one.

I’ve also been really sick lately and I’m finding it hard to be at my desk as much, so a decent laptop would sure be nice.

I’m so behind, technologically speaking. My mom has more electronic devices than I do.

Desk. My desktop computer is too darn awkward to use in bed. :)

I work at my desk mostly. Actually, I put a desktop and a laptop on my desk. I use these 2 machines at the same time.

I want to work somewhere else, like dining table. But I don’t have wireless access yet. My husband concerns security issue. Is it really a concern?

When we first moved into our new house I was in a cramped corner area of a living room with no light and working in the dark.

Now we turned a section of our downstairs into my office, we ripped up the carpet put in tile and my hubby bought me a nice new desk, new computer and a real desk chair lol. The whole downstairs is my office. It has a table as well a china cabinet that I can keep all my favorite items in two cabinets to keep supplies and books from speakers and my own research books. I have another mini desk for more supplies.

I also have my calendar, 4 corkboards for notes and my favorite photos.

During the summer when I am not doing a radio show I am outside on my laptop working on my back deck while the kids are swimming in our pond.

Although I do prefer working on my desktop at least with my laptop I can be outside writing or doing articles etc while watching the kids.

I just graduated to a grown-up desk (mission-style with two small drawers and a keyboard tray) after years on a 6 ft. folding table sitting on my file cabinets. The space on the 6 ft. table was nice though I filled it up too quickly and the clutter made it hard to work. I’m now challenged to keep a cleaner work area because of the reduced space and the discipline makes me feel better.

I’ve considered a laptop and might go that route if we install wireless in the house. Being able to sit on the couch and work (okay, surf) would be nice.

It’s so cool to here about everyone’s workspace and where they prefer to work. Looks like I’m outnumbered on the desk thing, though. :-)
Grace - a wireless connection can be secured. My husband is the techy around here, so I can’t really advise you…but I’m sure that yours can do some research into securing your connection as well.

I do work at a desk, mainly because I don’t have a laptop.

But I do dream of the days of sitting on my back porch, looking out on the beautiful water. Of course, I’ll need to move first:-)

I currently work at my armoire desk in the family room/kitchen area so I can be near the babies BUT…today I’m having my laptop delivered and then I’ll have the luxury of working anywhere is my house, outside by the pool in the FL sun, on a trip to the mountains and another trip to the beach over the summer.

    Life is good!

I have a laptop and still work at my desk, in a very uncomfortable chair…in my bedroom!

    *sigh*

Thing is, I’m currently living with my aging/elderly parents doing what I can for them.

I also cannot work outside the home since 2003 due to back problems, so it’s a help-help situation…financially speaking for me.

I spend most of my time during the day in my office at my desktop machine, but with school ending soon I’ll be spending more time on the back patio with the laptop.

Only downside is I haven’t figured out why I can’t get my home network setup so I can swap files from one computer to the other which is a real pain in the neck.

    Hi Alice,

I finally got a wireless connection yesterday, which my husband said should be secured. I pushed him everyday last week to get this for me.

    Thanks,

    Grace

Yeah Grace! Glad you get it all set up.

Got something to say?
