If you had only one way of communicating with your prospects, what would you choose?
Would it be your blog, a website, email, podcast…? Be sure to say why, cuz well, I’m nosy. ![]()

Oh good question! I’ve been thinking about this actually, because I find it difficult to keep up with blogging and a newsletter… can’t imagine adding a podcast to that mix too!
I would like to get rid of the newsletter and just use my blog to keep in touch with prospects. But I don’t know if this is a good strategy or not.
Would love to see some more discussion on this…

Wow. Tough question. It’s a toss up between email and podcasting. Hmmm, let me think “aloud” for a moment here.
Email because:
* Still very easy to use for people to use
* I am a little more in control given that I have their name and email address, not just an anonymous RSS subscriber
Podcast because:
* Very personal
* They take me with them
* The most powerful way I know of for establishing a personal brand and relationship with someone due to the connection of human voice.
Does only one medium mean I can’t drive them to a podcast or blog with the email? Dang this is tough.
I think I’d have to say podcast just because it has really worked so incredibly well for me. The most important thing I have is my relationship with my audience and the podcast does more than anything to establish that.

If there was a way to get scalability or leverage in speaking with people one-on-one, that would be the ultimate solution.
Video-over-IP is getting there, but people aren’t responding to it yet. It’s not mainstream or commonplace, and even some of the top internet marketers, with their huge databases, find it difficult to pull together any more than a few dozen viewers.
Until video works, email is probably the best we’ve got.

Email, email and more email.
I’m allergic to the phone and quite shy when talking on it.
eMail, however, I’m dynamite.
Did I mention that I prefer email?

@Barbara,
I’m with you. Phone is at the BOTTOM of the list. I hate it and have done quite well without using it for some time now.

I would have to say if I could only have one medium to communicate then it would have to be telepathy, that way no typing, no talking, just pure thought. My wife already accuses me of communicating this way…however she never gets most of the messages, so must try to up my deliverability rate.

Alice,
Definitely I pick webinars. I love the fun and useful interaction at Lynn Terry’s weekly gathering. We’ve developed such a sense of community and camaraderie that I enjoy as a member but would also adore if it were my own customer group.
I have just one question: If we can only communicate one way we didn’t pick email, how will our customers KNOW about podcasts, webinars, blogs or websites? Just wondering…

I prefer blog. But I believe email is most productive. Phone is last choice. I hate to talk on the phone.

Yes, I guess that could be confusing, Deb.
Blog is the way to go for me, but then I have an option for them to get the blog posts via email (just like Alice), so is that considered blogging or email?

Although I LOVE doing my blogtalkradio show, if I had to pick just one it would have to be my blog as it is more versatile and an easier way to connect with people.

Since virtually everyone in your niche is a “prospect”, i’d hav to go with Blog.
I love the power of the email list, but it is only as good as the # of people on it…the blog is extensively farther reaching (and will build said list).
That make sense/

I forgot to spell/grammar check, sorry.

Hmmmm…I’d have to say it’s a toss up between email and blog. I’m definitley more of an email person, but a blog would reach so many more by far.

Oh no! Do I have to choose? I can not live without my email. Email is a good one-to-one communication tools. But, for prospecting and advertising you are limited to your email list. A Blog can reach a wider audience, and you can feed articles to your email address, website, etc. If I had to give up email (no I can’t) I guess a Blog will keep me from jumping out a window. Just kidding.
To answer this question we need to focus on the question that was asked. For prospecting which tool would you choose? In that respect I would choose a blog. I would differently need my other tools, but would use them for different reasons. Don’t try to use all your tools to do the same job (a daunting task in itself). Choosing the best tool(s) for the job would be my approach.
P.S. Can I still keep my email?????

Tin cans and a lot of string, baby.
Now that’s old school.

Hm, now if you’d asked which platform to build a presence - I would say Facebook (in combo with Twitter!)
But, to actually communicate with prospects I’d have to go with permission-based email. Since people have “put up their hands” and specifically asked me to write to them, I can better direct my messages. Also, I can customize and personalize those messages. The challenge though, is if someone unsubscribes… what then? Well, maybe they weren’t a prospect afterall.
My $0.02.
(Great to meet you on Saturday at the Speed Money Seminar, Alice!!! You look totally HOT for 6 months gal!! I just put up a pic of ya on FB, btw).

Thanks EVERYONE for your very thoughtful replies. I’ve enjoyed and learned from each and everyone. Just a few thoughts on a few of them:
Jason - Well, it was just a “for fun” question, so it would be tough to define rules…but yeah, I’d say you couldn’t send them to your podcast if you chose email.
LOL Barbara & Jason - I obviously have the same opinion of the phone because I completely forgot to include it as a possible example. OOPS!
Tracy - When you perfect that technique, please let us know, okay!
Deb - Exactly, how WOULD they know? Email is a very effective way to get the message out, isn’t it?
GiGi - Hmmm…that’s smart thinking, but I think it’s cheating for my question. He he he.
Mari - Good to meet you too! I’m not on Facebook, but hate pics of myself…so maybe that’s a good thing?

I’d have to choose podcast. I love the medium of audio.
Am I the only person left in the world that loves talking on the phone? LOL!
