Working Weekends is A-Okay!
Here’s Twitter comment from Dewald Pretorius that got me thinking about just how lucky we at home entrepreneurs really are. Dewald was having a fun evening, goofing off on the ‘puter (and sampling some wine…lucky guy) and he wrote:
But hey you know what? Who cares if it’s Friday night? Who cares if it’s the 3 AM on Wednesday or the middle of a Sunday afternoon? This is the BEAUTY of being your own boss and setting your own schedule.
Now, I don’t recommend working every single day all day…so I absolutely get Dewald’s point. But if someone skips work Tuesday - Thursday and decides to catch up on a Friday evening, I think that’s AWESOME.
I think it all comes down to responsible scheduling and balance. Use this amazing freedom to your advantage and work proudly whenever you decide to do so.

Hi Alice
I absolutely agree. I used to think that I HAD to work ‘normal office hours’ and then felt guilty if I ran to the shops or did something ‘for me’ when I should be working. Since I rationalised that I’m my own boss and can work when I choose, the pressure’s off and everything gets done.

I agree, Alice. I have to confess, I am still somewhat of the mindset of feeling a little guilty when I work on Saturdays and Sundays, but you’re right, that should be up to us. Sometimes during the week, I have to take time off, and if I have the time on the weekends, why not do some work?
This is the beauty of owning a home based business - flexibility, plus I love it, so it doesn’t seem like work!
Alice you hit the nail on the head when you said it comes down to balance. I used to be queen of working everyday until all hours of the morning but I wasn’t being responsible or productive. I was wasting more time than anything.
The whole reason I’m my own boss is so that I can make my own schedule up & like you said Alice, if someone wants to take Tues-Thurs off & then catch up on Friday that’s the freedom we have.
I agree Alice. In fact I’ve always felt funny about how so many IM types disparage working on weekends.
For some of us, that’s the time when we have childcare help. When my kids are with their Dad, you better believe I’m going to bust my hump working. That way I can give them more of my attention all week. If someone thinks I’m a loser for that, so be it.
Ditto on the business hours thing. I’ve never done that. I’ve always had little ones to work aorund, so my hours were when they were sleeping or I had help or were otherwise occupied.
This is the whole POINT of my internet business.
I always say pick your own weekend! I work best at night because the kids are sleeping. The flexibility is wonderful. I generally work weekends too. My choice, my preference.
UhOh. I’m one of those who try really really hard not to work weekends. I’m in trouble
But seriously, I try not to work weekends because I already work so many long hours during the week day. Yes, I’m lucky to be able to have some chunks of time during the week - but not when school’s out.
Also, I try not to work on the weekends because that is one of the only times I get to spend with the hubby. But it’s not always the case. 50 - 60% of my weekends are filled with work because… heck I love what I do.
