Moodle - Free Open Source Course Management

Freebie FridayHere’s an interesting free program that one of my members introduced me to. It’s called Moodle. You can create highly interactive online courses with multiple instructors and students.

Some things you can specify:

-> A weekly or topic format. Or you can have courses in one main forum.

-> How long the course will take.

-> Course start date if you want it to start and end on a certain date.

-> Create hidden sections

-> Show grades to students

-> Show activity reports to students

-> Set whether or not enrollment is allowed in the course

-> Make student groups

-> Assign roles like: Administrator, Creator, Teacher (with and without editing permissions), students and guests.

It’s very sophisticated and allows you to add documents, forums, glossaries, surveys, a wiki, chat, assignments and more.

You can learn more about Moodle at Moodle.org. Also, if you’re a monthly Outsourcing SweetieMoodle member, there is a training sheet that shows you the initial set up of a course in Moodle once you have it installed.

If I Give Too Much Content for Free, People Won’t Buy My Info Products

Myth Crusher MondayWe’re all told that providing content freely can be a great lead-generator for our businesses…but what if we’re trying to sell our information? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?

The short answer is no.

Here’s just a few reasons why:

1. Sharing useful information is what establishes you as a trustworthy source that people will readily buy from and recommend to their friends.

2. Having content out there is an amazing source of free traffic; whether it’s from search engines, links from other sites, repeat visitors or word-of-mouth.

3. Gives people the idea that if you’re free information is already that good, your paid stuff must be AMAZING (and it is, isn’t it?!).

4. Content doesn’t always have to be informative. People use the Internet not only to find information, but they also like to be entertained. You can share videos, funny stories and all kinds of things that connect you with your target customer. You don’t always have to play the role of teacher.

5. Your paid information can have a number of benefits which aren’t as readily provided through free content. For example, it is highly-focused information on a specific topic, saving your buyer a lot of research time. It is more step-by-step stuff that will guide your reader the whole way through what they want to accomplish. If you provide any consultation or additional support, it’s worth it to those that need that extra helping hand.

But what if you still think you can’t divulge your good stuff?

I can see in many cases where you’ve focused ALL your marketing on a very narrow market, you might corner yourself where you can’t freely share information.

For example, if your business is centered around Yorkshire Terrier owners who want to learn to tie bows in their dogs hair then you might limit yourself as far as what information you can freely provide. I mean, you don’t want to give away all of your bow tying secrets for free if you’re selling an ebook. ;-) But seriously, if your target market is that narrow, you’re really limiting yourself and the ability to grow your customer-base. Instead of bow-tying Yorkie owners, you can widen your market to focus on all issues/challenges of owing a Yorkie.

Remember that although your INDIVIDUAL PRODUCTS will have a very narrow focus (ex. bows for Yorkies)…your content marketing plan can include all Yorkie owners, allowing you to reach far more prospects. It also has the added benefit of being able to sell them all kinds of products instead of just bows, brushes and ebooks on doggy hairdos. You can sell products related to breeding, health, showing, training and the list goes on and on.

In short, when you think of marketing with content…go wide and you’ll expand the horizons of your readers AND expand your profits too.

Three Thoughts Thursday: Information Product Pitfalls

Information products are a great way to earn a living online, but often I see people come in with big expectations, only having it really backfire. It’s not uncommon for people to come online thinking “I can create an ebook about XYZ and I’ll make tons selling it online.” Without proper planning, it just ain’t gonna happen.

Here are a few of the things anyone considering the addition of info products to their business should take into consideration BEFORE creating them.

1. Information products are great if people are willing to PAY for the information.
Just because there are a lot of searches, doesn’t mean people are willing to pay. One easy to way to see is if other products are selling on the same topic (Hint: be an affiliate first). If you find a topic that’s a winner, create a better product and out-market them.

2. You MUST be willing to market the product…really! I see a lot of people create info products and then…nothing happens. If you are not willing to spend money on advertising and/or very aggressively recruit affiliates, do NOT start your online venture with paid info products. Build your traffic and mailing list to start with instead. Then sell to them once you have an audience.

3. Know your market. This one ties into the last one, but I can’t stress enough, that you must have and really know your market. This will help you decide if the product is something that they really want. Learn what makes your customers tick use those points to sell the product to them. Once you know audience you’ll learn what they are willing to pay for and what maybe might be a better to give away to them to keep them interested and wanting more.

If you’re interested in learning more about creating info products come back this weekend for a Sweetie Saturday giveaway you won’t want to miss. Betcha can’t guess what it is! Hehehe.

Sometimes It’s BETTER Than Outsourcing

Just sent this out to my subscribers…in case you missed it. I think it’s worth mentioning because I see questions about this kind of thing all the time.

————-

I’m just getting ready to release a follow-up report to last week’s outsourcing interview (I received some great questions after releasing it) and I hope to have that ready for you by Thursday. I’ll email you as soon as it’s ready.

In the meantime, I wanted to discuss another angle to “leveraging the work of others“. When it comes to outsourcing, you are paying someone else for their time spent helping you with your business. It’s perfect for specific tasks you’d like completed - whether it’s a one- time thing or on an ongoing basis.

But sometimes creating an actual partnership with another online business owner is the ideal situation. Whether it’s to create a website, a product, a membership site or a teleseminar, there are many partnership possibilities.

There a number of reasons why you might want to create a partnership. Here’s just a couple:

#1 It’s an opportunity to bring skills and resources together. Everybody has something to bring to the table. Whether it’s programming skills, copywriting skills, a large
mailing list or affiliate database…pooling those together can be a very powerful thing.

…and for people on a budget…

#2 It’s a viable alternative to traditional outsourcing. If you’re coming at this from a position where you’re willing to work hard, have some decent skills, but don’t have the funds to build a team…creating a profit-sharing partnership might be the ideal situation for yourself.

Whatever your reasons, I know a lot people have a lot of questions about creating partnerships and hesitate to get started before they have the answers to those questions.

Well, luckily Kelly McCausey & Nicole Dean have just launched “Easy Partnerships” which shows you how to benefit from and put together viable partnerships. They’ve even included an in-depth Q&A session with a qualified attorney to clear up some of those legal uncertainties as well.

If you’ve been wanting to explore the possibilities of partnerships, definitely check out all the details at:

-> http://www.easypartnershipsonline.com

They’ll guide you through the whole process from partnership ideas, finding and approaching potential partners, working together and more.
