Happy Birthday to My Little Guy & Three Thoughts on Being a Mom at Home

Thursday's Three ThoughtsToday is a special day in the home of this at-home mom entrepreneur. My youngest turns 5 today and has he prepares to become a big brother later this year, I’m taking time to ponder my 3 thoughts why it’s da bomb to be a business mom at home.

1. I can be there when I’m needed: sick days, volunteering at school, play days, cuddles and more.

My Little Guy2. Even though I’m largely at home for the family, I’m able to focus on my own intellectual and financial pursuits through my business.

3. I can show my kids an alternative career that is an amazingly creative outlet, doesn’t involve a commute, a huge gas bill and working for a mean ol’ boss.

We’ve all gotta have reason WHY we do what we do (whether we have kids or not). What’s YOURS?

(Edited 2 sentences above for clarity – I hope!)

  1. Nell

awww, Happy Birthday Natey boy. I bet he’ll be a great big brother!

  2. Happy Birthday Nate! Have a fun day!

Alice – isn’t it great to be a work at home mom?!

  3. Happy Birthday Big Brother to Be!

But WHOA! When did I miss the big news.? Congratulations on #3 being on the way Alice!

  4. Alice have you read The Feminine Mistake? (Leslie Bennetts is the author) I got to hear Leslie speak a couple of weeks ago and she blew my stockings off. I’m getting ready to write a really long article about “Why Wahms Aren’t Making the Feminine Mistake”. But anyway… your point #2 made me think of it.

Little Nate is a cute punk!

  5. Alice

I haven’t read it, Carrie. You read A LOT! ;-)

Linda, it’s why I talk about pancakes on Twitter all the time. Baby is HUNGRY!

Thanks for the wishes Nell and Marie.

  6. Happy Birthday, Nate!

Both of my girls have told me that they plan to work for themselves someday so that they can be like me. What a nice compliment after years of working at home – they actually appreciate it.

  7. Awww, happy birthday Nate!!

Yes, I love being home for the beautiful days we can spend together outside, and also for watching movies. She’s a movie buff, like her mommie! :-)

  8. Best birthday wishes to Nate!

Best wishes to you, Alice! I am currently working in tandem with my wife, a mom at home, who works as she can, manages the home and our business while I am slaving in an office (until I can cash in and get home!), AND she homeschools our two sons, 10 and 12. They are budding online entrepreneurial wannabes!

I appreciate all your tips and info!

    Cheers,
    Paul

  9. I thought I had the coolest mohawk, but I was wrong :(

    Happy B-day big guy!

  10. Thanks again everyone.

Alejandro, that is not a mohawk. That is a “shark-cut”. That pic is taken at the hairdresser where my kids always get to choose the animal they want to be. It is cooler than a mohawk! :-)

  11. Well, I don’t have kids and never wanted them. I married later in life and my wife is fine not having kids as well. I could not imagine life with them, much the opposite of the rest of you on this blog. Why? One reason is never met Miss Right early enough. Another is a less than happy upbringing. Another is I don’t like family restaurants, family vacation spots, family movies, etc. I like kids, but not for very long (no humor intended).

  12. After thought: I was replying to the question above, “why we have kids or not”. Seems the title of this thread is a bit different however. Happy Birthday to the handsome little man!

  13. No problem, Chaz. Actually that very confusing question was meant to ask.

What is your reason WHY for doing what you do? Regardless of whether or not you have kids.

My sentence was a bit goofy. :-)

  14. The Reason Why Alice? Freedom of course.

Freedom to choose your work times and tasks mainly. It certainly isn’t the money, because I could make more in a job. Nor is it the hassles (I think jobs are easier overall).

I cannot stand the restrictions of a job. Don’t know how I did for so long. Hope I never need experiece them again.

BTW, thank you for all you do. I have it on my to do list to join your PLM program soon. :)

    ~Chaz

  15. I like the freedom and the fact that I am here to standby when my 2 little kids need me…… Treece, my 3 year old boy says the same thing as your girls. About half year ago, he said he wanna be a doctor. But recently, he told me that he wants to earn money at home, like me, in future. Is it okay if my boy wants to be a WAHD or WAHF (daddy/father)?

  16. Ooooh! HaPpY BiRtDaY to NaTe… Hope your day was BIG FUN!!! (love your great smile too)

My main reason for working at home is… I’m allergic to Corporate America! ;-)

Congratulations on the new addition too.
