Three Thoughts On Why You Needn’t Worry about the A-List

Thursday's Three ThoughtsRecently, I noticed an interesting post from Andy Beard about TrafficJam. Now it wasn’t his discussion of TrafficJam that really got me thinking (although he does make some astute observations on it), it was what he wrote lower down on the page.

He was talking about how it was refreshing to see a variety of blogs posts from all kinds of bloggers who aren’t necessarily well-known, but had some great content to share.

Then he wrote:

“Well not quite everyone is an unknown, there is a post from the Income.com blog on the list, as well as from Alice Seba, and one from Lynn Terry @ Clicknewzthey probably have more paying customers than many A-list bloggers have subscribers .”

I’m sorry, but the reality of that statement tickled me pink and the truth of it was pretty eye-opening.

Sometimes, we feel like Blogging is a big popularity contest…but you know what? I’m a “for profit Blogger” and it’s my bottom-line results that matter. I may not have 123 people comment on each of my blog posts and my RSS subscribers are still in the triple digits, but the financial result of having this blog has been incredibly rewarding…not mention hobnobbing with my modest fan club here is a lot of fun. :-)

So, if you’re looking at those ultra-popular blogs and feeling a little low because of it, cut it out!

The Blogging Beauty QueenHere are 3 thoughts to take with you:

1. If you created a blog for marketing business, you are not in a popularity contest or any type of pageant. You needn’t parade around in your swimsuit to impress us because you don’t need to. You know what the results of your blogging and if it’s working for your business, that’s what matters.

2. To have a loyal fan/customer base, you don’t need a gazillion people to think you’re the greatest. As I wrote in the short report I posted earlier:

“Let’s be realistic. To be an ‘expert’ doesn’t mean you have to know more than anyone else in the world on the subject. It just means that you know enough that your target audience comes to you for your perspective. It’s that simple.”

All you want is a highly-targeted group that loves your work and buys your stuff.

3. Keep improving your results. Maybe right now you don’t feel like you’re on the A-List or even the Z-list, but that’s okay. Focus on serving your market, delivering them the products and services they’re looking for and tweaking along the way – you’ll get there.

And by the way, if you want to get there a little faster, make sure you’re on the notification list for mine and Lynette’s Blogging Bootcamp. Registration starts on Monday…and we’d love give you a boot-kickin’ to get things rolling! :-)

  1. Alice, your blog is one of my very favourite blogs so I am definitely voting for you as an A-list blogger.

  2. Great post Alice! It’s true… when blogging you really have to keep your goals in mind all the time, otherwise you can easily get distracted by trying to become part of the A-list, when the real purpose of it all is reaching your goals.

  3. Quite what I should have said definitively as my conclusion to the post I did 2 days back, on “My Failed Blogging Experiment”.

Back to ‘for profit’ blogging – and vive la 197 RSS subscribers! :-)

    All success

  4. Honestly, I never thought of the A-list or z-list. I just started my blog recently and I am very new to these concepts. But your piece just helps me to focus on my target market. Do not worry about what everyone else is doing. Also, my goal as a “profit blogger”.
    Thanks Alice

  5. Awesome advice Alice, It’s all about doing everything you can for your market. I have a small feeling that I may end up in your course. LOL.

  6. I love it Alice, but I am pretty disappointed that we won’t see you walking around in your swimsuit. LOL! Love that.

You know what, all of a sudden I feel much better. I do have a bit of comment envy when I see some personality bloggers who get 100+ comments for each post they write.

But then I remember, hey, I don’t want to take the TIME to read or reply to all those comments! I like making money and that’s what my blogs are mostly about. ;) I can play with my kids for fun.

  7. That was reassuring to read today as I was recently holding back from many ideas for blog posts because I was trying so hard to think of how to impress everyone. You are right I don’t need to impress everyone, just the ones that like to hear the information I like to share with them. I am so tired of comparing my wittiness to all of these popular mom bloggers that have everyone’s attention with their well written stories about their daily adventures. I was really starting to doubt my abilities as a blogger. Thanks, you hit the nail on the head once again Alice and we all follow you because you know stuff and you know what we need/want to hear.

    Have a great weekend!

  8. Thank you, Alice, for your blog post. You’re an encouragement to us bloggers…and perhaps if we’re desperate for 100 comments we can start posting our own on our blog. Wouldn’t that be amusing to our visitors…talking to ourselves and carrying on quite an intersting conversation. hee! hee!

  9. Really great post, Alice. It doesn’t matter if you have thousands of people on your feed reader and hundreds of comments per post if you aren’t fulfilling your bottom line…whatever that might be for you.

  10. Great post Alice. Love the sense of humor and the great beauty pageant picture! LOL
