What Is Your Favorite Online Communication Medium?
A couple weeks ago, I asked if you prefer writing or speaking, but let’s get a little more specific in regard to the way you like to send and receive information online. Whether it’s email, through blogs, video or audio, there are many ways to communicate online.
What are favorite ways to send and receive information online?

I like to write blog articles as it a more relaxed writing style and allows others to comment on my content.
My favorite meeting places are twitter and facebook. I have my blog posts posted on my Facebook profile
I like to consume broadcast information (news, blogs, Twitter posts, forum posts, tech support requests, etc.) via RSS feeds. A good feed reader (like NetNewsWire on Mac or FeedReader on Windows) makes it very easy to scan lots of information, flag anything I want to keep, and let the rest just disappear.
I also like consuming via podcast now that I’ve set myself up with a decent way to listen to them that doesn’t require searching for downloaded files and a lot of monkeying around with various programs — they run in the background while I work on other things.
I like UStream both for the extra personal feel that video creates and for the chat “subchannel”.
I like to SEND broadcast information via Twitter for small stuff and my blog for big stuff. I also use AWeber, but I find it much more cumbersome than the other solutions I mentioned (I’m working on a way to fix that problem…)
For two-way communication, I like email for anything that doesn’t have to be done NOW because it prevents interruptions to my workflow. For things that have to be done NOW, I like IM because it’s self documenting (log the chat and you don’t have to take notes), and because it’s easy for each party to do something else during the pauses in the conversation — something that feels less comfortable on the phone.
If documentation of the conversation isn’t needed and/or communication needs to be faster, telephone works well. But as you may have gathered, it’s not my first choice.

I love TEXT. Especially your plain text emails, Alice – I get SO much out of those! And I love just reading information, rather than being forced to access videos or mp3s. Mostly because I live in rural northern Ontario, and I absolutely *cannot* get high-speed internet, in any form.
About once every week or so, I travel to my son’s house, and download any videos or mp3s I need (he lives in a high-speed zone.) Also, I don’t have a lot of time during my work-day – it’s jam-packed with tasks – and viewing videos or listening to mp3s takes megatons of waiting and waiting and…
That being said, I really love how you offer all three options/learning preferences in your courses – once I’ve managed to download them, the mp3s and the videos are a wonderful back up learning reinforcement for the text .PDF files. I also really like the transcripts – means I can access the information straight away.
I know everyone in Internet Marketing is thrilled about podcasting, videos, webinars, RSS, etc – but this sudden massive increase in technology on the web, PHP, and the corresponding increase in page-loading time, are the absolute bane of my existence, right now.
I have to say that your site, Alice, combines all the best of both worlds (hi-tech and low-tech) – great design and graphics with your text, fast-loading pages, and wonderful organization. Thank you.

Interesting perspectives…I think we are all so different.
Marya, I wasn’t fishing for compliments, but thank you! I do try to cater to all tastes. Even though my courses usually include a variety of formats, I tend to stick with and prefer text…for both sending and receiving information.
And even though there are plenty of people who love it, I absolutely hate it when someone gets my attention on Twitter, for example, and then links to a video. Unless the video is supposed to be funny (I like humor in my online videos), I skip them completely.
Hi Alice,
I think my favorite is webinar because then you can have instant feedback with another person. Right now I’m in a mastermind group on social media which has a monthly webinar where you can ask the presenter information ‘on the spot’ and also use all the other static methods of blog, twitter, video etcetc.
If you would like to know a bit more about the group you can see them at www.australismedia.com
I listened to a great podcast the other day over at Successfool.com, regarding How to Shine in 2009. Alejandro shared that it’s important to reach your readers with all the preferred modes of communication: reading/text, podcast, video. One of my goals for 2009 is to figure out how to add all those modes to my blog for 2009.
