Mailing List vs. Blog Content

Q: How do you decide what will be on a blog and what will be in your newsletter?

A: Hmmm…I don’t know. Sometimes I will point my newsletter subscribers to my blog for content, so there is overlap. I try to save my hard-selling to my newsletter and rarely do big sales pitches on my blog (but I didn’t say NEVER).  I don’t mean I always sell to my newsletter subscribers, but I find a pitch in a newsletter is far more effective than a pitch on a blog. I also find people except to receive sales messages in an email, but seem to expect it less from a blog. I think a blog is just a place to chat with your readers and sales pitches tend to change the tone.

I may post more humorous items on my blog or post something “just for fun”. People value their time and I don’t want to waste their valuable email time we know people are already inundated with email.

I rarely post formal articles on my blog and would give those to my newsletter readers instead as it’s what’s expected. If I’m trying to form a relationship with my readers, frequently posting other people’s articles or being so formal in my own kind of defeats the purpose. I definitely tend to be a bit more personal in my blogs (i.e. I share personal info) than in my newsletter  even though mediums usually have a personal tone for me.

As far as what goes where, honestly, it’s a bit haphazard for me. I am just constantly looking for content ideas. If it’s not time to mail out to my list, I’ll probably just post it to my blog. There is no right or wrong answer…it’s just the way it works for me.
