Should I Optimize My Website for Search Engines

Q:
I am thinking of optimizing my site to get more traffic and hopefully increase my sales. Do you think it’s a good idea?

A:
Sure, I think it’s a good idea. My websites receive over 100,000 visitors every month (as of March 2005) directly from organic search engine rankings. They are a huge part of my business, but as I mentioned in a recent blog entry…we need to use a well-rounded method of driving traffic to our sites. Don’t allow search engines to be your only source of traffic because if search engines ban you, you will have no traffic and no business.
That said, I do think you should educate yourself on the basics of search engines and then push forward by creating plenty of content that search engines will love. Don’t get hung up on the little details and the debates people generate about search engines because what might be true today is old news tomorrow. However, if you just follow the basics and don’t try to figure out every little algorithm, you’ll set yourself up for long-term success. It’s what I’ve been doing for 3 years and it just keeps on working for me (despite the unfortunate mysterious ban of the site mentioned in my blog).
