Q: As a complete novice with big ideas, where do I start. I have been studying the art of internet marketing, but my computer skills are so basic I am getting nowhere fast. Please help.

A: Well, you definitely have a challenge ahead of you, but this is certainly not something that can’t be overcome. We all start in the same boat as you — we aren’t born with computer skills. Some people take courses or I’d venture to say that most people just learn with practice. The more you use your computer and Internet, the more comfortable you become.

When I started my Internet business, I was comfortable with answering email, surfing the net and using Microsoft Word. I had NO idea how to build a website, but I opened up FrontPage and went to it. Of course, my first few attempts weren’t beautiful, but I got better and faster with time.

I’m not sure where your challenges are, but you managed to find my website, sign up for my newsletter and even submit a question form – you’re doing just fine!

If you use programs like Microsoft Word at all, you can build a website…I promise. I did it and countless others did it. And since you said you have been “studying the art of Internet marketing” it sounds to me like you’re a good student and you don’t mind getting your hands a bit dirty to learn something.

If you want to learn HTML, which isn’t exactly necessary, you might check out a site like Lissa Explains. The site was created by a girl named Lissa, who was a young girl who set out to create an HTML site for kids…but don’t let that make you think it’s not for you. I’ve had countless adults tell me that this is best HTML resource they’ve come across.

You can also use site builders to create your website and you might consider a free trial of my own easy website builder. As I mentioned in an email I sent out last week, I have tried a lot of site builders and this is the easiest and most feature-rich that I’ve come across. Still, realize there is a learning curve and it gets easier and easier all the time.

If you’re intimidated by some of the technology involved in advertising and promoting your website, just take it one step-at-a-time. Learn one skill and then move onto another. Best of luck!
